29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

World Mission Sunday collection

“Brothers and sisters:
Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin.
So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.” (Hebrews 4:14-16)

“We who celebrate the Mass or any sacrament as a holy community – as a Christian people – are doing something in the present that stands for something else that is going on in the present.  It is true that it has important reference to the past, Jesus Christ is in heaven, ‘the holy city of Jerusalem,’ now ‘sitting at the right hand of God.’ (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy #8)

The priest at Mass presides over a true sacrificial mean in our midst.  It is the same sacrifice as the offering of praise Christ is making now to His Father in the heavenly court.  The fact that it is a remembrance rite or memorial of a death and resurrection that happened in the past is secondary to its importance as an event of today.  In the liturgy, God is at work to sanctify and save us.  ‘My Father has never yet ceased his work,’ Jesus said when He healed a man on the Sabbath, ‘and I am working too.’” (John 5:17)
